2015 YLC Camper Information

Camper Information

  • Application Deadline: February 8, 2015 - EXTENDED to Wednesday, February 18th, 2015
  • Camp session: June 23 - July 20, 2015

The total fee for the 2015 NAD Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) session, not including airfare, is $1,850. This includes the following:

  • $1,800 camp fee. First portion ($800) due by March 13, 2015, second portion ($500) due by April 3, 2015, and third portion ($500) due by May 1, 2015; do not submit until you receive the acceptance letter;
  • $50 application fee (applicants who do not get accepted will get a refund), due February 8, 2015, submit with application;
  • Ground transportation (i.e., to/from airport, bus, or train station; field trips; weekly laundromat visits);
  • One (1) NAD YLC T-shirt; and
  • One (1) NAD YLC group photograph.

All NAD YLC campers should meet the following expectations:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • High school sophomores and juniors (going to be a junior or senior)
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities

All applicants are required to submit: 

  • Typed Essay
  • Video Essay
  • Resume
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendations

After receiving a letter of acceptance, campers must complete the following:

  • Provide a photocopy of both sides of the health insurance card
  • Complete and submit a health history form signed by a physician
  • Sign and return medical release, liability agreement, and publicity release forms
  • Complete any other required forms.

Students who meet the above expectations will submit a typed essay and a video essay, which must include answers to the following questions:

  • Typed Essay Questions - (please include your full name at the top of your essay)

1. Name 3 characteristics that make you unique in a group setting. Please explain.

2. What would you do if the LCD projector goes blank and you have to give a presentation in a few minutes?

The typed essay must be half-page per question (single spaced and 12 pt font) and should be written by the applicant without assistance from others. Please create your essay in a Microsoft Word document and save it as YLC_Essay_LastName _FirstName. (ex. YLC_Essay_Rice_Allie). The online application will have a section for you to attach your essay.

2. How do you think you will benefit from the experience?

Video Instructions:

  • Should be 1.5 - 2 minutes long
  • Film in a well-lit area
  • You can use a digitial camera, webcam, or a device with a built in camera (i.e. laptop/computer, iPad, iPhone): record a video using any video program. Save your video as YLC_CamperVlog_LastName_FirstName.
  • Email your video to If you are unable to attach the video via email, you can upload it via YouTube and email the link instead.

Students are also required to submit a resume, which should contain a few paragraphs that describe your leadership experiences. These experiences should be revolved around your involvement in school activites or community events you have participated in. Please include your resume on the same document as your essay. 

Letters of Recommendation
Camper applicants need to provide three (3) letters of recommendations, one each of the following:

  • School administrator (ex: Superintendent, Principal, Assistant Principal)
  • Teacher
  • Junior NAD advisor or School Counselor

Camper Application
The last step is to complete the Online Camper Application. Students will not be considered if we do not receive all information requested (Essay, Video Essay, Resume, Letters of Recommendation). Camper application deadline is February 8, 2015. We will send you an email to inform you about the status of your application. If you are accepted as a 2015 YLC camper, we will send you a packet with more information. We look forward to receiving your camper application!
