MISS DEAF AMERICA: Hello! Maybe, you are puzzled with why I am not at the NAD Headquarters…
That’s because I am 3,000 miles away from the east coast. Yes! I am here at California School for the Deaf, Riverside with their Jr. NAD chapter. I must thank the CSDR Jr. NAD members because they are helping me to make this vlog happen.
So, why I am here on the west coast?
For a change, I decided to spend a few months in the Golden State. Although, I have to admit; the weather is really nice during wintertime! I still get to wear flip-flops and sunglasses.
Anyways, for the past few months, I have spent numerous hours volunteering. I spent time working at a regional trail park and several fun festivals at different locations in Maryland. I presented at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School for their Student of the Month celebration. I also attended and volunteered at the Maryland Association of the Deaf (MDAD) Conference. I performed at the Mr. and Miss Jr. NAD competition during the Jr. NAD National Conference at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) in Washington, D.C.
My most recent trip was to Aspen, Colorado. I flew in and gave a presentation to a great crowd and everything was fine until it was time for me to go, my flight got delayed and cancelled — twice! All because of the insane amount of snow. I decided to volunteer at the Aspen Camp for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, I really enjoyed my time there.
Most of the locations where I volunteered were in the DC/ MD/ VA area. Now that I am in California, I am excited to make contributions on the other side of the United States!
If you are interested in having me volunteer at your school, work with your organization, or make an appearance, feel free to contact Allie Rice, NAD Youth Programs Coordinator through this website (www.nad.org/contactus). I must say it is a bittersweet feeling to realize that I only have the next few months left to serve as the NAD Miss Deaf America 2012 – 2014. Grab this opportunity to contact us about appearance requests!
I hope to see you soon. Have a great year, thank you!
