The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is concerned about information not being readily accessible for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in case of an emergency; the NAD is interested in learning about Baltimore County residents who have experience with emergencies. Examples of good emergency planning include qualified interpreters during appropriate times, effective methods of communicating with residents who need shelter, and captioning on emergency announcements and warnings.
What the NAD is interested in learning:
• How information is shared to residents before an emergency – such as educational materials online, public workshops, etc.
• Is the information available in text and/or ASL?
• Communication before, during, and after an emergency.
• The inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in Baltimore County’s emergency preparedness planning, and any other issues that arise during emergencies.
We are seeking deaf or hard of hearing Baltimore County resident(s) and those who work in Baltimore County who have had a difficult time receiving information from Baltimore officials before, during, and/or after an emergency in the past. Alternatively, if you have never experienced an emergency, we are interested in hearing from those who may be concerned about their ability to communicate effectively with Baltimore County in case of an emergency.
Please email us at nad(dot)info (at) nad(dot)org with the subject “Baltimore County Resident”. You can also contact us online and share your information. If you have any questions, you can call the NAD Headquarters at 301-587-1788.
