Sharing ASL with Millions through the Super Bowl

Kriston Pumphrey stands in front of a large sign that says Houston at the top and Super Bowl below. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) expresses its gratitude to the National Football League (NFL) and FOX Sports for their continued commitment to improving accessibility in the most viewed event in the USA – the Super Bowl.

Both the NFL and FOX Sports made it possible for millions to view Kriston Pumphrey perform his American Sign Language (ASL) rendition of the National Anthem and America the Beautiful. The Super Bowl is a powerful platform to showcase ASL as an authentic language in this country, and provides a way for people to see artistically skilled deaf talent display different styles in signing our national songs.

Further, the NFL and FOX Sports have ensured the captioning of all national commercials and network promotions, making the entire Super Bowl experience accessible and available to all.

There are 48 million deaf and hard of hearing individuals in this country alone who are able to enjoy the Super Bowl thanks to the ongoing efforts of the NFL and the broadcasters such as FOX Sports every year. The NAD looks forward to working with them to achieve even more access in the years to come.
