The NAD protects the civil, human, and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing people by taking on cases that challenge discrimination and by providing tools to help individuals know and use their rights. While we take only a limited number of cases, our focus is on those that can create change for the broader community—through stronger laws, clearer policies, and lasting impact.

We take into consideration select civil rights cases under federal disability laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

By taking on specific cases, we aim to:

• Set legal precedents that courts and agencies must follow in future cases
• Influence federal and state laws and policies
• Benefit many others in similar situations

These cases may involve barriers to ASL access, interpreters, and reasonable accommodations in areas such as:

• Education: Schools, colleges, and training programs
• Employment: Workplaces across industries
• Healthcare: Hospitals, clinics, and medical offices
• Legal and Civic Systems: Courts, law enforcement, and correctional facilities
• Public Accommodations: Businesses, services, and community programs

We do not handle legal issues outside of disability and access rights, such as:

• Criminal and Family: Divorce, custody, child support, and other criminal law issues
• Personal and Financial: Personal injury, car accidents, real estate, landlord/tenant disputes, and bankruptcy
• Benefits and Immigration: Social Security, SSI, or SSDI appeals, and immigration cases
